Pool of QB’s for 2010 starting to Get Shallow

QB Nick Montana

You never really want to hit the panic button but if you are top flight Division-I program looking for a hot shot quarterback, it’s time to start doubling up on your efforts.

We have seen a recent run on quarterbacks of late as the signal callers have been making their commitments and intentions known to their prospective schools. We have seen three of the top 12 Rivals.com quarterbacks make commitments over the last two weeks.

Two weeks ago, #2 ranked Austin Hinder chose Jeff Tedford and California which seem to push Jake Heaps to make his choice which was BYU. Not sure if this was a domino effect but the Heaps commitment seemed to put a charge into Nick Montana who surprised many with his plans to go to Seattle and play for the Washington Huskies.

As it stands now, more than half of the Top 20 pro style QBs for 2010 have picked their schools. This is sure to make the D-I programs start making more of an effort to secure “their man”. The highest rated QB without a commitment at this time is Lakewood High School’s (California) Jesse Scroggins. Scroggins has been lauded over by many and he holds offers from just about anyone who’s serious about getting a QB. College coaches have been impressed with him on film and during the recent evaluation period last month, they were more impressed with him in person. See if you are impressed when you watch his film click here, I know I was. Scroggins has USC high on his list along with LSU and Tennessee. The Gators are on him strong and he expressed a strong interest in Cal. Scroggins is full of confidence and will not be deterred by who has committed where. Scroggins wants to make his decision before school starts and has echoed what a number of high school offensive skill players have been saying lately and that is they have a desire to play in a pro-style offense.

Other Top 20 QB’s still undecided are McKinney H.S. (Texas) Zach Lee, Cincinnati Moeller’s Andrew Hendrix, Valhalla H.S. (California) Pete Thomas, Cincinnati Xavier’s Luke Massa, Monte Vista (California) Brett Nottingham, East Valley California’s Tyler Shreve and Crespi High School’s (California) Bryan Bennett.

The smart coaches, however, know that all that glitters in the Top 20 is not gold. Many a great signal caller resides at the bottom of the list or not even on the list at all. As the top 20’s start to pick their place, sharp recruiters will make their moves on players they have been trying to keep on the down low. Often times, the schools have been putting their chess pieces in place with these players and use the run on commitments to pressure the player into making a commitment to them.

The list of top rated dual threat QB’s are just about as committed as the pro style QB’s. Of the Top 20 Rivals.com top rated dual threat QB’s, 11 of them are committed to schools. Here’s a list of those who are committed.

Player College
#2 Devin Gardner Michigan
#7 Johnny Deaton Oklahoma St.
#8 James Franklin Missouri
#9 Jeremy Johnson West Virginia
#11 Matt Brown Arizona
#13 Tom Parish Minnesota
#14 Tyler Smith Maryland
#15 Dallas Lloyd Stanford
#17 Connor Shaw South Carolina
#18 Trey Burton Florida
#19 Chandler Whitmer Illinois

The #1 ranked dual QB in the country Barry Bruneti is still undecided. Bruneti plays for Memphis University School in Tennessee and naturally is a candidate to attend Tennessee. However, Bruneti does not hold a Tennesse offer believe it or not. Tennessee is still in the running for Scroggins and Hendrix on the Pro Style QB side and apparently favor dual QB prospects like Miami Central’s Jeffrey Godfrey and Ft. Pierce Central’s Tim Smith better than Bruneti. Bruneti’s height (6’0″) concerns some colleges. Bruneti has listed favorites of Penn St., Mississippi St. and West Virginia. However, West Virginia already has a QB commit for class of 2010 in Jeremy Johnson.

Among the top named schools who have not yet locked down a commitment are Ohio St., USC, Oregon, Miami, Georgia, Notre Dame, Tennessee and FSU.   Ohio St. is was in hard on Nick Montana but lost out on him to Washington as did Notre Dame.   The Fighting Irish also missed out on Jake Heaps who opted to play ball at BYU.  Miami had an offer into dual QB threat Dallas Lloyd but lost him to Stanford.
