Under Armour 2010 High School All Star Game Highlights

In case you missed it,  the Under Armour High School Football All Star Game was this past Saturday.   Overall,  I would have to say that it was a sloppy contest as there were a laundry list of errors in the game.  I guess some of this is to be expected in an All Star game atmosphere but this particular contest had more than it’s fair share of blunders.

What stood out to me the most was the inability of the wide receivers to catch the football.  Pass after pass was dropped.  You had punts getting mishandled and fumbled.  It looked as though this game was sponsored by Johnson & Johnson Baby Oil.  The other thing that stood out was the fact that virtually 85% of the snaps taken in the game were from the shotgun.  Now I like the spread just as much as the next guy but did that many snaps need to be taken from the gun?  It would have been nice to come away from the game knowing which one of these All Star quarterbacks has been schooled on taking a drop and reading a defense on their decent back in the pocket from under center.

There were many players that did some good things in the game and I won’t be able to mention them all but here’s a few that stood out to me.  Dominque Easley,  who committed to Florida during the game,  looked like Dwight Freeney out there.  Very quick, agile and a tough assignment for the tackles to block.  WR Darius White from Texas who is also commited to Texas.  He had a couple of nice punt returns and a TD catch.  Jeff Luc had about five tackles in the game.  He also buried Michigan QB Devin Gardner in beast like Jeff Luc fashion.  Michael Taylor,  linebacker from Westlake High School in Atlanta, Georgia.  Ran around and made plays.  He was very aggressive and seem to be prepared for the event.  Phillip Sims may have looked the best of the QB’s.  He has a live arm,  as he displayed in the skills competition with a 67 yard throw.  He also moves around well in the pocket and seems poised when pressured.

Demar Dorsey from Ft. Lauderdale Florida and heading to Gainesville  is full of confidence and backed it up with his play.  He had an interception and showed some sick strength for a “skinny” guy when he flipped Michael Dyer over his back like he was in WrestleMania.  Jonathan Dowling,  safety from Florida and a Gator commit,  showed what he’s all about.  The kid just has a nose for the ball and came away with a pair of interceptions in the contest one of which he returned for a TD.   Dowling picked off 14 passes his junior year.    Gardner,  from Inkster High School and headed to Ann Arbor also looked solid at the quarterback position and appeared to be a leader.   There were some others that did big things but those were the ones who stood out.

To put pictures to the words I wrote,  Check out a brief highlight video of the 2010 Under Armour Game:

Wires and Rumors

From the Rumor and Wires….

April 25, 2009

Nick Montana not attending Ohio St. spring game.  Looks like Notre Dame front runner for Joe’s kid.

Gridironstuds.com member Cody Riggs will be attending Ohio St. Spring Game today along with his mate in the defensive backfield and Gridironstuds.com member Lamarcus Joyner.

Gridironstuds.com member Lynden Trail has been offered by USC.

Wayzata H.S. (Minnesota) LB A.J. Tarpley is in California this weekend visiting UCLA and Stanford.

Pleasant Grove H.S. (Utah) QB, Dallas Lloyd has been offered a scholarship by the University of Miami. Check out his highlight video.

April 23, 2009

Top 40 times at University of Miami’s testing on Wednesday

40-YARD DASH
1 Sam Shields 4.20
2 Brandon McGee 4.23
3 Graig Cooper, 4.37
4T Tommy Streeter 4.40
4T Ryan Hill 4.40

………….. .. . . . …………. . . . …………………

#1 LB recruit in the nation Jeff Luc has enjoyed his visits to Miami, Florida and Florida St. but is not naming a leader or a top 5. Says USC is recruiting him hard and that he will make decision before December because he plans to graduate early and attend the school of his choice next spring.

April 22, 2009

Miami Northwestern cornerback Khalid Marshall has been offered by LSU.

James Potts (American Heritage, Delray) Florida has just received 3 new offers. The 5′11″ 190 lb. running back has received offers from Vanderbilt, Rutgers and Memphis.

Lamarcus Joyner was impressed with his weekend visits to Florida St. , Tennessee and Alabama. Reportedly a dead heat amongst those three schools and Ohio St. University of Miami recruiting him hard and still in the running, albeit outside of the top four.

April 21, 2009

Word is University of Miami’s Brandon McGee a top 2009 signee, who entered school early, clocked 40 times ranging from 4.19 to 4.26 during testing today. Needless to say this would be a record for Hurricane football.

Florida St. has offered Woodberry Forest, VA linebacker Aramide Olaniyan. As reported earlier, Olaniyan is a Duke Commit but this has not stopped Clemson and Florida St. from making their offers within the last week. I guess folks don’t have much respect for a Duke commit these days.

The University of Miami has made a scholarship offer to David Perry DE at University School in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Perry also has offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida St., Kentucky, Ole Miss, Oregon, Purdue, South Carolina, Tennessee and Central Florida.

The Greg Paulus college tour will make a stop in Syracuse.

Former high school #1 recruit Matt Barkley has surpassed Mitch Mustain in reps at USC’s spring practice.

USC is the latest school to offer consensus #1 recruit Seantrel Henderson out of Minnesota. The ridiculously big 6′8″305 Henderson now has over 30 offers. Henderson’s USC offer came over the phone directly from head coach Pete Carroll. Many feel that Minnesota has a legit shot at landing this top prospect.

Former University of Miami quarterback Robert Mavre has announced his final 5 of teams he’s considering transferring to. After recently dropping Michigan and UCLA from the list, he has announced that the final 5 teams are: Nebraska, Texas Tech, Purdue, Arizona St. and South Florida.

April 20, 2009

Despite being an Oklahoma St. commit, Sand Springs, Oklahoma QB, Johnny Deaton has just been offered a scholarship from Kansas St. Deaton passed for 1874 (11 tds) and rushed for 1,665 (19t tds) in leading Charles Page high school last year.

Good news for WVU fans. Quote from Ohio Safety and Gridironstuds.com member Latwan Anderson ” in love with west virginia cant wait to go back I love that place.”

April 19, 2009

Recruits reported to have been at the University of Florida Spring game on Saturday. Matt Elam, Demar Dorsey, Gerald Christian, Quinton Dunbar, Ted Meline, Ivan McCartney, Gideo Ajagbe, Travis Bell, Richard Ash, James Louis, Brandon Linder, Gio Bernard, Vinnie Mauro, Kembrell Thompkins.

Rumors are that Demar Dorsey has eased off of Gator commit because of the depth in the secondary, playing time concerns and the recent commitment of Jaylen Watkins to Gators.

April 18, 2009

Highly recruited Skyline High School (Washington) QB and Gridironstuds.com member Jake Heaps has named his top 5 schools Scout.com is reporting. His five, in no particular order are BYU, California, LSU, Tennessee and Washington. Heaps is expected to make his college choice some time in the summer.

North Broward Prep High School (Florida) RB and Oregon commit Ethan Grant has been offered a scholarship by Wisconsin.
