Rumors and Wires Week of June 8, 2009

June 13th

The University of Miami received a surprise visit from a pair of top cornerback recruits on Saturday when St. Thomas Aquinas’ Keion Payne and Lamarcus Joyner dropped by to take a look at the school.

2009 Ohio St. recruit and Gridironstuds.com member Jaamal Berry was arrested in Miami on Thursday and charged with felony marijuana possession of more than 28 grams.

June 12th

Port St. Lucie H.S. (Florida) and Gridironstuds.com member Jeff Luc begins an eight school tour today. Luc will be visiting Duke, Clemson, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Kentucky, Georgia and Tennessee.

Florida Gators are hosting top recruits CB Cody Riggs (St. Thomas Aquinas),RB Ken Malcome (Decatur, GA) and DE T.J> Stripling (Decatur, GA).

Pahokee H.S. (Florida) WR and Gridironstuds.com member DeJoshua Johnson really enjoyed his Alabama trip and has put the Crimson Tide up there with the Seminoles at the top of his list.

Cincinnati commit from Lakota West H.S. (Ohio) TE Alex Smith says he’s not going back on his commitment but he’s going to take trips to other schools. (I always wonder what that means). Smith has offers from 20 plus other schools including LSU, Michigan, Miami and Penn St. That’s quite an impressive list of schools to entertain while keeping a Cincinnati commitment. This will be interesting.

Tampa bay Tech H.S. (Florida) FB Maurice Hagens has committed to the University of Miami. Hagens also has offers from Purdue, Connecticut, Wake Forest, Arkansas and wait for it….. wait for it…. Tennessee!

June 11th

Pahokee wide receiver and Gridironstuds.com member Chris Dunkley will be visiting Georgia tomorrow (Friday).

Apopka H.S. (Florida) defensive back and Gridironstuds.com Lo Wood says he will make his college decision on June 26th.

Lely H.S. (Naples, FL) running back Darion Hall commits to the Miami Hurricanes. Hall also has offers from Florida St. Michigan, Clemson, Arkansas, South Carolina, Kansas, West Virginia, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin and Colorado St.

Glades Central H.S. (Florida) cornerback Greg Dent Jr. has received an offer from the University of Miami. Dent also has offers from Arkansas, South Florida and F.I.U.

Donovan Tate, a 2009 signee to North Carolina and son of former UGA running back Lars Tate, was selected third pick overall in the MLB draft. Tate says he’s unsure about his future and is represented by super-baseball agent Scott Boras. I am guessing he goes the baseball route.

June 10th

Oaks Christian H.S. (California) QB Nick Montana (son of Joe Montana) has committed to Washington. Montana said Washington offers him the best opportunity to start early. Also said he really liked the city, the school and his visit.

Word is top Florida Gators’ recruit Jonathan Dowling has looked great at their camp and has been working primarily at wide receiver. Dowling was tops in the state in interceptions in 2008 while playing safety.

The South Carolina Gamecocks have offered a scholarship to Lexington H.S. (South Carolina) FRESHMAN Shaq Roland. The 6’1″ 175 Roland led the team in interceptions and was fourth on the team in tackles.

Calhoun H.S. (Georgia) WR Da’Rick Rogers has committed to Georgia. Rogers also has offers from Florida, LSU, West Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi St., Central Florida and USC.

June 9th

As expected, Jawara White, outside linebacker from Troy, Alabama, committed to Auburn yesterday. White has offers from Florida St., Kentucky, Ole Miss, Alabama and Arkansas.

Temple Texas running back and Gridironstuds.com member Lache Seastrunk has apologized for his comments during the ‘Big Cat Weekend’ a couple of weekends ago at Auburn. Seastrunk was seen on video saying that “Nick Saban is S.O.L.” among other things.

June 8th

Continuing the ongoing saga that is Tennessee Vols football recruiting. Reports are that Tennessee has already racked up more than $1.1 million in recruiting expenses this fiscal year. The 2009 recruiting class cost Tennessee $1,099,513.16. Coach David Reaves was the leader in expenses for coaches at $15,836.43.

Top WR recruit, Jeremy Richardson has committed to Auburn. Johnson chose Auburn over Alabama, Tennessee and LSU.

Notre Dame has secured a commitment from highly rated wide receiver Bennett Jackson (Raritan H.S., New Jersey). Jackson is also being recruited by Michigan St., North Carolina, West Virginia, Rutgers and Pittsburgh.

Lakewood H.S. (California) safety Dion Bailey names USC, UCLA, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Tennessee as his top schools.

Ridgeway H.S. (Tennessee) linebacker Justin Maclin has chosen LSU. He is also being recruited by USC, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee and others.

Westfield H.A. (Houston, Tx) QB Jacoby Walker has chosen Kansas as his school. Walker has offers from Syracuse, Oklahoma St., Houston, Nebraska, Iowa St. and Kansas St.

Fordham University will begin offering scholarships for the first time next year since 1954.

WVU tabbing recent QB commit Jeremy Johnson (Silsbee H.S., Texas) as the next Pat White. The 6’2″ 182 lb. Johnson has run 10.7 in the 100 meters and has a 23-10 feet long jump to his credit. Johnson is also being recruited by Kentucky, Missouri, Baylor, TCU, Vanderbilt, S. Miss., Kansas St., Purdue, Houston, Arkansas and Michigan.
