Cane on Cane Violence: Hester and Shields Slap Boxing on a Sunday

October 11th, 2011

Yes,  I know it’s old news but there are still those of you out there who have not seen it.  So this is for you.  A couple of weeks back, the Packers were out doing their thing which of late is beating the back out of the Chicago Bears (sorry windy city fans).

During the course of another Packers victory,  Sam Shields found himself going down field with Hester on a pass route and things got a little testy.  Don’t know who shoved who first and what may have led up to this but what I do know is that Hester and Shields started to go “All Andre Rison vs. Deion” on each other.  Luckily the referee and cooler heads prevailed before it go full scale but this is the first I can recall two Hurricane teammates getting into it with each other on the field.  Now, this would not have been unusual on the Hurricane practice field but to see it when they are on separate pro teams is unusual.   For those wondering,  Shields and Hester were not at Miami at the same time.  Shields came right after Hester’s departure. If anyone can name another instance in which this would have happened,  please comment.  If anyone can think of an instance in which players from the same school got into on the NFL field,  please comment.

Finally,  who would win a race between these two?  Shields has been clocked at 4.23 and Hester at 4.24.   That would be better than this facemask pounding contest.

Gridironstuds.com Owner Chad Wilson featured in Palm Beach Post Article

Here is repost of Palm Beach Post article written by Jorge Milian on Gridironstuds.com onwer Chad Wilson

Sixteen years later, ex-UM football player Chad Wilson earns his degree

by Jorge Milian

Among the 49 current and former UM athletes going through graduation ceremonies last week was Chad Wilson.

Nothing odd about that except that Wilson received his bachelor’s degree in business management a few days shy of turning 39.

“Nothing like being dressed up in your cap and gown with gray hair sitting next to some 22-year-old,” said Wilson, a cornerback from 1992-94 under the Dennis Erickson-coached Hurricanes.

Before returning to school last year, Wilson last attended a class at UM in 1995. Since then, Wilson had started a family, opened a small business and gotten into coaching.

“I already had a very busy schedule,” Wilson said. “I have three kids, I’m a dad and I’m a husband, I have a business and I’m also a football coach. It was very difficult for me to juggle those things. Adding school to it was extra difficult. It was a tremendous sacrifice.”

But Wilson thought it was well worth it because of the children – step-daughter Damianis Eusebio, 17, and sons Quincy, 14, and Marco, 12 – he shares with his wife, Carmen.

“I’m stressing education to them,” Wilson said. “I wanted to be able to say to them, ‘Hey look, I have my degree. Now you guys get to where I am and go beyond.’”

Wilson thought of returning to school to complete his degree – he was 18 credits short –five years ago. But he thought better of it after learning that each credit at UM would cost him $1,100.

“I was already getting by without the degree so laying out $20,000 wasn’t the best idea,” Wilson said.

But a former Hurricanes’ teammate, Gerard Daphnis, told Wilson about a UM program in which the school’s athletic department picks up tuition if a former athlete is close to obtaining a degree.

Wilson jumped at the chance and began classes last summer.

The first day in class Wilson starkly realized the age gap between he and his fellow students. The professor displayed a picture of an Atari video computer system, which had the computer entertainment market cornered in the 1970s and early ‘80s.

“He said, ‘I know none of you are old enough to remember what this is,’” Wilson recalled. “I raised my hand up and was like, ‘Not everybody.’”

Wilson is one of the sharpest young men I’ve met in my 17 years on the UM beat so I can assure you his falling short of a degree during his playing days wasn’t about smarts or effort. Instead, Wilson was a victim of circumstances.

Wilson, who grew up in Pembroke Pines before moving to California in high school, played his two seasons of college football at Long Beach State. When Wilson transferred following his freshman season, UM declined to accept 30 credits he earned at Long Beach. Later, Wilson lost 18 more credits when he switched majors.

“I was sitting there with 120 credits, more than enough to graduate,” said Wilson, who started 13 games in two seasons for UM and was a second-team All-Big East selection in 1994. “But I hadn’t completed all the required courses in business. I had all these classes, all these credits. It would have been silly for me not to finish.”

Not that it was easy. To graduate, Wilson had to pass a mind-bending statistics course. He took the prerequisite 15 years ago.

Being an old head, Wilson didn’t panic. In fact, he served as something of a mentor to his classmates, many who were nearly young enough to be his children.

“It felt good to offer to advice to kids who are going where I’ve already been,” Wilson said.

Wilson has plenty of experience in working with young people. He’s been the defensive coordinator at University School in Davie for four seasons. Last year, University School reached the state 2B championship game before losing 56-55 in triple overtime.

Wilson also is the owner of Gridironstuds.com, a website that allows youth and high school football players to create a profile and add highlight videos that can be viewed by college recruiters.

So Wilson wears a lot of hats. Husband. Dad. Coach. Business owner. And now, college graduate.

“I had to finish what I started,” Wilson said.

Rumors and Wires: Week of October 5, 2009

October 7th, 2009

Glenville H.S. (Ohio) safety Latwan Anderson has delayed his commitment announcement.  Anderson was scheduled to announce on October 10th.  However,  Anderson says his coach has told him to take his visits and have fun with it.   I really think it comes down to West Virginia and Ohio St. and I am going to go out on a limb and say that I think he favors West Virginia over Ohio St.  We will see how things unfold.

Gainesville H.S. (Florida) cornerback Devont’a Davis has committed to the Miami Hurricanes.   Davis, an admitted Gators fan made some interesting comments to InsidetheU.  Speaking about Florida, who he does not currently have an offer from, Davis said the following:

“To me, I feel like I have nothing against Florida, I’m still going to love Florida, but I’m a Cane. Even if they offer me a scholarship, I’m not worried about that. It doesn’t matter. I’m a Cane and that’s all that matters.”

He also added:  “Miami is on a roll right now. I have to be a apart of it right now. I’m excited right now. I’m out of breath right now.”

Booker T’s Trail and Dunbar Commit to Gators after Big Win

October 4th, 2009

Lost amid the hoopla and elation of Miami Booker T. Washington’s huge win over nationally ranked Miami Northwestern Saturday night was the commitment of two of Booker T’s top senior players.

Upon the completion of the contest, defensive end Lynden Trail and wide receiver Quinton Dunbar ran to the middle of the field and put on Florida Gator caps signifying that Florida is their team.

Trail was quoted in the Miami Herald saying:

“I hope Coach [Urban] Meyer is still in town and he’s watching this,” said Trail, who had two sacks and eight tackles.

“This doesn’t mean I won’t take visits and that the recruiting process is over for us, but right now Florida is our team.”

Trail is #85 ranked player in the country according to Rivals.com is also being recruited by Florida St., Georgia, Miami, USC and Tennessee.

Dunbar committed to the University of Miami earlier this spring but then decommitted. Now he has somewhat of a pledge to the Gators. Dunbar is also being recruited by Florida St., West Virginia, Michigan, Purdue and several others.

Both players were instrumental in pulling one of the big upsets thus far in the high school football season. Miami Northwestern is headed towards an ESPN matchup next weekend with Miami Central. Perhaps they were looking ahead or perhaps Booker T. Washington is just that good. Trail recovered two fumbles in the game, returning one for a touchdown and another 75 yards to set up a score. Booker T. defeated Northwestern 35-28 to move to 5-0 on the season.

Orlando Sentinnel Votes ’01 Miami Hurricanes Team of the Decade

July 2nd, 2009

The Orlando Sentinel had an extended countdown of the top teams of 2000′s and after much information and debate,  they have voted the Miami Hurricanes the Top Team of the Decade.

Few can argue with this assertion.  A case can be made for the 2004 USC Trojans or the 2005 Longhorns but when you really shake it all out,  the 2001 Miami Hurricane team is not only the best team of the decade,  it’s perhaps the best team of all time.

The ’01 Hurricanes ran through their schedule like a wayward elderly driven Lincoln Continental through a store front.  They blitzkrieged the competition and before a team even unpacked their materials they were staring at a double digit deficit with little hope of closing the gap.  The Washington Huskies were perhaps the most unfortunate of their 2001 opponents as the alumni riled up the team about Washington’s claims of being the real champions of 1991.   A decade later,  it was obvious which program was on top as Miami rolled over them 65-7.   Some will point to the pair of close calls against Boston College and Virginia Tech but the bottom line is that Miami won those games and often times,  team will fall in those instances.

In the final game,  the Rose Bowl,  for all the marbles,  Miami knocked Nebraska and quarterback Eric Crouch senseless, producing a final score of 37-14.  Those watching know that it could have been worse as Miami had a 34-0 half time lead.  In the end,  the 2001 roster produced 38 NFL draft picks,  of which,  17 were first rounders.  Fourteen of those 38 players are starters on NFL teams and as the Orlando Sentinel pointed out,  at least one has a date with Canton (Ed Reed).

The rest of the list went like this:

Two: 2005 Texas Longhorns
Three: 2004 USC Trojans
Four: 2002 Ohio St. Buckeyes
Five: 2000 Oklahoma Sooners
Six: 2008 Florida Gators
Seven: 2006 Florida Gators
Eight: 2003 LSU Tigers
Nine: 2007 LSU Tigers
