For Top Recruits, Choosing to Go Out of State Can Incur the Wrath of Fans

So, I’m on Facebook last night and come across a comment made by top recruit Jeremy Cash in which he asked why everyone is so interested in his life.  Apparently and this is an assumption on my part,  Cash has been getting a little heat from University of Miami, Florida and possibly Florida St.  fans because a talented kid from the state has chosen to be a Buckeye.  This happens all too often.

After reading it,  I impart my wisdom to Cash and make the comment that he’d better get used to it and how I watched top Ohio recruit Latwan Anderson go through the same thing with Buckeye fans when he chose to go to Miami.   This happens for any coveted recruit that leaves the state to play football.  It’s the nature of college football and their fans FROM ALL TEAMS. Innocent enough,  I thought.  Boy was I mistaken.  Within 15 minutes,  there’s a comment to my comment from a gentleman named Cliff Smith who writes for a website I have too much respect for to mention in this light.

“Gridiron, you crack me up. Exactly what did Twan get hard from Buck fans? 90% of what I saw leading up to and after his commitment was about how he is a much better fit at UM and wishing him luck. I saw very little sour grapes (which you’ll have some of with every fanbase),”  he says.

So Mr. Smith wants us to believe that Ohio St. Buckeye fans,  who as he clearly shows are some of the most passionate, knowledgeable and opinionated in all of college football were O.K. with the top recruit in the state heading to The Miami Hurricanes?   What did he have in his brown paper bag last night?   Not only were a few Buckeye fans snippy on Anderson’s Facebook page but the message boards were particularly ugly.  Comments in Buckeye message boards about Anderson not having the grades so he couldn’t get into Ohio St. anway,  to he will be just fine at “Thug U”, to we didn’t need him anyway were commonplace but shhhhh  don’t tell Cliff Smith that.   Mr. Smith was too busy burying his head in the sand thinking that Buckeye fans are somehow going to be different than the fans for all of the other college football programs in the country.  Comically,  not too long after Mr. Smith replied to my comment,  a Buckeye fan also comments with this “Latwan Anderson did not have the grades to get into Ohio St.”  This guy just made my point for me.  It was stuff like this,  Anderson had to and to a certain degree still has to endure from some Ohio St. fans.

Another common occurrence on Facebook are fans having verbal jousts on a recruit’s page that can rage on for 100 comments.  In an effort to avoid this situation,  I replied back:

“Guys, this is Jeremy’s page. Sorry I mentioned Latwan Anderson. Didn’t know it would be a lightning rod. If anyone wants to discuss this, hit me up on my page. I can’t stand when fans and the like have debates on a recruit’s page. It’s juvenile”

This is me clearly trying to kick sand on a small fire and put it out.  I can keep my thoughts to myself and Mr. Smith can keep his opinions in tact so we can all move on but Noooooooo.   Mr. Smith’s reply:

“Agreed. Puzzled why he was brought up in the first place. Nice backpedal and projecting though. Congrats to Ocho!”

Was that necessary?  No.  I’m backpedaling? Was his first comment to me necessary? No.  So,  if you know me then you know that sarcasm is what I do.  I couldn’t help myself,

“Ok, Cliffy thanks. Go have another doughnut buddy!,”  I replied.

Was it unnecessary,  I guess you could say yes.  Was it juvenile,  probably.  Did Mr. Smith,  fan masquerading as a writer deserve it?  Oh hell yeah.

Of course,  his feelings were hurt and he replied stating how my reply was juvenile and that he really didn’t have anything else to say to me.  This is how I wanted it in the first place and it took me getting juvenile to accomplish that mission.   I let Mr. Smith have the last word on Jeremy’s page because it seems that was the only way it could be.  It’s over right?  Wrong.

I wake up this morning to another piece of communication from a “writer” from the same publication I don’t want to mention out of respect for the organization.   His was the most hilarious of all communications I have received in 2010.  The gentleman’s (term used loosely) name is Nick Leach and he said the following in an email to me:

Chad, I just wanted to say I was disappointed with the comments you made on Jeremy Cash’s page. I know you’re saddened he chose OSU over Miami (I’ll wait for you to say you don’t care), but such is life. To make up statements like the state of Ohio turned on Latwan is not only ludicrous but it gives a false impression to a recruit, which for someone that runs a website I find extremely distasteful and upsetting. You are entitled to your opinion, as is everyone, but to make those falsities on his public page was just a low that I did not expect from you.

Let’s break this down.  First of all,  I run a website that aids high school football players from all over the country get into colleges located all over the country.  To stake my emotional state on where a kid chooses to go to school would be ludicrous.  Yes,  I played at the University of Miami.  Yes,  I root for them on Saturdays but to think that I lose sleep over whether or not a talented recruit goes there or not shows how little brain power Mr. Leach is working with.  Gridironstuds.com was instrumental in launching Jeff Luc to superstar status last year.  Not only did I tell Miami about Luc when he first put his video on my site,  I told any and everyone across the country.  In the end,  Jeff went to Florida St. and I am elated for the kid.   I was not saddened, disgruntled or remorseful.  Luc will tell you that himself.  I was the first to congratulate him on that important milestone in his life.  That’s what I started this site for.

For Mr. Leach to be disappointed in me he would first have to care about me and that is clearly not so.  The guy does not know me from a hole in the wall.  Maybe he thinks I am one of these recruits he calls up and tries to pretend he’s buddies with.  He forgets that I had one other piece of communication with him and he came off like a pompous jerk then too.

He said my comments were extremely “distasteful” and “upsetting”.   My comments upset him extremely?  Whoa,  looks like somebody needs to get a life.  I am going to take up a donation to get Mr. Leach an X-Box or a subscription to “E-Harmony”.     He also described my comments as “falsities”.   Refer to my comments about Mr. Smith having his head in the sand.

Finally,  both Mr. Smith and Mr. Leach apparently,  know very little about Jeremy Cash.  I have spoken to Cash on a few occasions.  I have spoken with his step father as well and have been around Cash enough to see how he conducts himself.   I don’t know that I have seen a high school aged kid with his act more together academically, athletically, socially and spiritually as he.  Brett Goetz,  the founder of the South Florida Express 7-on-7 team speaks highly enough about Cash to make you think he would vote Cash president if he were on the ballot.   To suggest that my innocent comment,  intended to put Cash’s situation in perspective,  would lead to him changing his mind about Ohio St. is the only thing that is disappointing.   Jeremy Cash is too strong minded and intelligent to be swayed by the words of people outside of his circle.   That would include me,  Mr. Smith and Mr. Leach.   Shame on these two guys for giving that impression.

Would Cash have been a great pick up for the University of Miami?  He is a good pick up for any school that gets him.  He brings a lot to the table for a school and Cash will get a lot from The Ohio St. University,  one of the most prestigious colleges and football programs in the country.

Unfortunately,  Ohio St. Buckeye fans are like Republicans.  The overwhelming majority of their fans are cordial, polite and generally have good dispositions.  However,  the small percentage of them that choose to draw publicity, speak up and make themselves heard represent them in a poor way.  At least that has been my experience and that played itself out once again in this “incident.”

Latwan Anderson,  is also too head strong, too determined and too focused to be swayed by the comments made on his Facebook page, message boards or in his email inbox.   Those qualities are what have driven guys like Anderson and Cash to the top of their game.  Fans should not waste their time,  reputation and dignity trying to persuade them leading up to and after they have made their decision.

I went through the recruiting process,  twice!   For anyone to think that I would factor in the opinions of fans, reporters and others over that of my parents, relatives and coaches is profoundly stupid for lack of a better word.

Future recruits that are highly rated and choose to leave the state to play for a program that is a rival will also be the same way.  These young men have achieved their level of success by being more than athletically gifted,  they had to be mentally strong to get there too.  This is something that the Cliff Smiths and Nick Leachs of the World can’t understand.

Gridironstuds.com Football Players Blazing A Trail on the Track

It’s that time of year as the track seasons start to wind down to take a look at the football players (particularly the Gridironstuds.com members) that are getting it done on the track.  These athletes have traded in their helmets for the tank top and track spikes and have shown their versatility by heating up the synthetic rubber.

You have to start with the fastest man in the country and that’s Ryan Lankford of Paxon Advanced Studies School in Jacksonville.  Lankford has committed to Illinois to play football this Fall and will take his 10.41 speed to Champagne to try and help the Fighting Illini climb back up the Big Ten standings.  Lankford’s 10.41 time is tops in the nation.

2010 Miami Hurricanes signee Latwan Anderson (pictured right) from Glenville H.S. in Ohio  has heated up the track in a big way.  Anderson has moved from a very successful season on the football field to an equally as impressive season on the track.  Anderson currently holds the fastest time in the country in the 200 with a 20.92 clocking last Saturday at the Maralyn H. West Invitational.  However,  that’s not all,  Anderson also holds the fourth fastest time in the country in the 400 meters with a time of 48.42 also run last week at the Maralyn West Invitational.   The football standout signed a track scholarship with the Hurricanes in March,  one month after the February 4th National Letter of Intent Signing Date.  It was a move met with some skepticism but Anderson is proving that move to be fruitful signing for both the track and football teams at the University of Miami.

Yet another top performer from the Gridironstuds.com members is St. Thomas Aquinas’ Cody Riggs.  The 2010 Florida signee and defending Florida state champ in the 300 meter hurdles currently holds the top time in the event this year with a time of 36.51.  He also ranks 2nd in the 110 meter hurdles nationwide with a time of 14.03 and he ranks 6th in the long jump with a mark of 23′-2.5″.

Other Gridironstuds.com football players turned track athletes performing well in the sprints are:   Shane Wynn,  Anderson’s teammate at Glenville.  Wynn has posted a 10.60 in the 1o0 meters making him tied for 14th overall in the country.  Wynn also has a 21.45 in the 200 meters under his belt this season.  Crenshaw (California) High School’s De’Anthony Thomas laid down a 10.67 in the 100 meters and a 21.48 in the 200 meters.    Miami Northwestern’s Corvin Lamb who will play for Louisville in 2010  has a 2010 best of 10.78 in the 100 meters.

Class of 2011 wide receiver Phillip Dorsett of St. Thomas Aquinas (Florida) has bests of 10.79 in the 100 meters, 21.97 in the 200 meters, 15.05 in the 110 meter hurdles, 39.14 in the 300 meter hurdles and has a nationally ranked mark of 47′ 9.50 in the Triple Jump.  Oh and by the way,  Dorsett is also a member of Aquinas’ 400 meter and 1600 meter relay teams.  He is the most versatile track athlete in this report.    Douglas High School (Florida)  junior Orville Reynolds has a 10.80 clocking in the 100 meters to his credit this 2010 outdoor season.  2010 Florida St. signee Lamarcus Joyner of St. Thomas Aquinas (Florida) has a 100 meter best of 10.83.   8th Grade sensation Sony Michel from American Heritage Plantation (Florida) clocked a 10.82 yesterday in his district meet.   Yes,  I did say 8th grade.

LSU 2010 signee Kadron Boone,  wide receiver from Trinity Catholic in Florida has a 100 meter best of 10.87.   2010 Ohio St. signee Corey Brown from Cardinal O’Hara (Pennsylvania) is ranked 28th in the country in the 200 with a time of 21.80.   Louisville 2010 signee Michaelee Harris from Miami Northwestern is 9th in the country in the 400 with a time of 48.65.

Latwan Anderson is a Miami Hurricane

Apparently ending what has turned into a bit of a soap opera since February 4th,  Glenville High School (Ohio) defensive back Latwan Anderson has committed to the University of Miami.  Anderson was scheduled to make an announcement at a press conference Wednesday morning but the conference was postponed because Glenville H.S. head coach Tedd Ginn Sr. was not able to make it.    According to Sports Illustrated,   Anderson is a Cane and will make the official announcement some time next week.  View Latwan Anderson’s highlight video.

Rumors and Wires: Week of March 8, 2010

March 9th’

Though not confirmed it seems that Latwan Anderson is on his way to the University of Miami.  Anderson was down in Miami this past weekend and there’s talk of him going to Miami on a track scholarship.  However,  the legalities of such a move must be examined.   If Anderson is going to play football then he has to be on a football scholarship.  Stay tuned.  In the meantime,  Anderson has grown bitter at West Virginia fans who are coming after him for what appears to be his decsion to attend Miami.

On Anderson’s Facebook Profile,  he has posted a message sent to him from a WVU fan that reads:

your a media whore, and want all of the attention you can get. To be truthful I don’t want your thug ass at WVU. Travis Bell is better than you and Q Forte, I DON’T WANT YOU AT WVU. Fucking Drama Queen, Media Whore…..good luck on a average Miami team, you should fit nicely on the bench there!I guess this is Wat they see”

Anderson’s profile pic also has a strong Miami feel to it:

Anderson expressed frustration in an earlier Facebook post in which he states “I haven’t even picked a school yet and WVU fans are telling me I won’t make it”. Anderson also goes on to stateMiami will treat me just as well as the WV would but i fit in more and have a better chance of making it at uofm”

Anderson’s decision has taken on a full life of it’s own and now has built itself up into something rather large.  Keep returning to Gridironstuds.com/blog/ for more details as they happen.
………… ………. . ……

Other News and Notes

In lieu of his recent arrest,  the University of Central Florida has decided to release Jose Jose from his scholarship. In a statement released by school,  head coach George O’Leary said: “I have decided to release Jose Jose from his scholarship at UCF due to expected player conduct rules and guidelines that have been established by UCF and UCF the football program.”

Anderson and Glenville Fall Short of State Title

latwan anderson

latwan anderson

History was within their grasp and it slipped out of their hands literally.  Already history makers by getting to this game,  the Glenville Tarblooders came up one point short of being the first Cleveland area public school to win a state title when they fell to Hilliard Davidson 16-15 on Saturday night.

It was a game that will go down as one of the best in Cleveland High School history.  Up 15-8 late in the 3rd quarter,  Glenville had a chance to put it away.  Deep in Davidson territory,  Glenville quarterback Cardale Jones found senior Christian Bryant cutting across the field near the end zone but Bryant could not haul in the pass and Glenville turned the ball over to Davidson.  The next play from scrimmage,  Hilliard’s quarterback Jake Trubiyano raced 73 yards with a carry down to the Glenville 3 yard line.  A couple of plays later Davidson was in the end zone to pull to within 15-14.  With balls of steel,  Davidson went for two and made it to go up 16-15 with just a minute left on the clock.   Glenville took the ball after a touchback and drove to the Davidson 45 yard line before Jones was intercepted in the end zone to seal the win for Davidson.

It was a storied season for Latwan Anderson and the Glenville Tarblooders.  Unfortunately,  they came up short of the win in the end in what was a thrilling high school football game.

Latwan Anderson Helping Lead Glenville High School to Places Unseen

Pop quiz! Name the last Cleveland area public high school to win an Ohio State football championship in any division. Answer? There has never been one. O.K., how about this one? Name the last Cleveland area public school to play for a state championship in any division. Answer? There has never been one, until now.

Gridironstuds.com’s very own Latwan Anderson and the Glenville High School Tarblooders have already made history by advancing to Saturday’s Division I state championship final where they will face Hilliard Davidson. Head coach Ted Ginn Sr. has put many of his players into Division I colleges and some like Troy Smith, Donte Whitner and Ted Ginn Jr. have even played in the NFL but until now, he could never say that he’s played for it all in Ohio High School football.

Anderson, a transfer from St. Edward’s High School earlier this year and the 18th ranked recruit according to Rivals has sparked Glenville’s blazed path through the 2009 season. Since losing their opener to St. Ignatius 14-13, Glenville has ripped off 13 wins in a row. Anderson helped Glenville serve notice in the 2nd round of the playoffs when they avenged the St. Ignatius loss 30-13. Anderson snagged three interceptions in that game including one that he returned 99 yards for a touchdown. Anderson has 11 interceptions on the season to lead the defense. Anderson is also joined by top recruit Christian Bryant on defense to head up a unit that only allowed 11 points per game.

Anderson also played some offense where he caught passes from junior quarterback Cardale Jones who has emerged as one of the state’s top quarterbacks. Jones has passed for over 1,800 yards, 18 TDs and has a 64% completion percentage. Wide receiver Shane Wynn is also one to watch with his 10 TDs and 18.3 yard per catch average.

Tarblooders go for history Saturday night at 7 P.M. against the 13-1 Hilliard Davidson Wildcats.

Glenville’s Latwan Anderson Goes Off

Senior’s Four Interceptions Leads Team to Playoff Win

He has proclaimed himself to be “the best in the nation” and Friday Night he stated his case. Senior transfer Latwan Anderson paid big dividends for Glenville High School and head coach Ted Ginn Sr. when plucked four St. Ignatius passes and returned them a combined 196 yards. Anderson’s biggest theft came as St. Ignatius was trying to state a comeback. Down 23-13, St. Ignatius drove into the red zone with the threat of a score. That was until Anderson stepped in front of a Mark Myer’s pass and raced 99 yards the other way for a touchdown. “That was the best game of my life,” Anderson was quoted as saying after the game. You can view Anderson’s exploits video amongst the other big plays in the exciting game from the video below courtesy of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Anderson’s jersey number is #1 (there’s a surprise!)
