“Experts” disagree on Top 10 Class of 2010 QB’s

October 13th, 2009
Jake Heaps Skyline H.S.

Jake Heaps Skyline H.S.

We are mid-way through the 2009 high school football season and college football prospects are making their marks and impressions on both college football fans and coaches. There are many college football recruiting experts out there and there is also much chatter about who the top quarterback prospects are for the upcoming 2010 class. In taking a look at three of the most notable prospect ranking services, it’s plain to see that they don’t all agree on who the top 5 or 10 prospects are for this class.

It would seem from looking at the rankings that Skyline H.S. (Washington) and Gridironstuds.com member Jake Heaps is the closest thing to a consensus #1. Heaps gets the top nod from both Scout.com and Rivals, while Tom Lemming gives Heaps the #2 rating. Lemming’s #1 ranked QB, Blake Bell sits at #3 for Scout.com and #4 for Rivals. Smith H.S. (Virginia) QB, Phillip Sims, who recently became the all time passing yards leader for the state of Virginia is the only other quarterback that is listed in the top 5 for all three experts.

In total 16 quarterbacks are listed amongst the top 10 of all three recruiting analysts (Rivals, Scout.com and Tom Lemming). All 16 of the quarterbacks are committed. Amongst the QB’s listed in the Top 5 of the three services, Blake Bell is committed to Oklahoma, Jake Heaps is committed to BYU, Phillip Sims is committed to Alabama, Connor Wood is committed to Texas, Austin Hinder is committed to California, Paul Jones is committed to Penn St., Devin Gardner is committed to Michigan and Jesse Scroggins is committed to USC. It’s rare for highly rated QB’s to still be open on their decision at this point in the season.

So far as who is having the best year so far from a statistical stand point, that would go to McKinney, H.S. (Texas) Zach Lee. Through a reported six games, Lee has passed for 20 TD’s, 5 interceptions and for 1,613 yards. That’s an average of 269 yards per game. The next out of the list of Top 10 would be Brett Nottingham of Monte Vista H.S. (California) who has played in 5 games. Nottingham has thrown 18 TD’s with 1 interception and 1,557 yards. That’s an average of 311 yards per game. Phillip Sims of Smith H.S. (Virginia) through 5 games has thrown 12 TD’s, 4 interceptions and for 1,408 yards for an average of 235 yards per game.

None of the three experts had the same Top 5 let alone the same Top 10.   Devin Gardner only appears in the Scout.com Top 10.  Paul Jones, Brett Nottingham and Tyler Bray only appear in the Rivals Top 10 but not in the other two. Jacoby Walker and Peter Thomas only appear in Lemming’s Top 10.

Below is a list of the Top 10 for each of the three analysts as of 10/12/09:

Tom Lemming Scout Rivals
1 Blake Bell Jake Heaps Jake Heaps
2 Jake Heaps Paul Jones Phillip Sims
3 Phillip Sims Blake Bell Jesse Scroggins
4 Connor Wood Devin Gardner Blake Bell
5 Austin Hinder Phillip Sims Connor Wood
6 Peter Thomas Connor Wood Tyler Bray
7 Joe Boisture Robert Bolden Paul Jones
8 Zach Lee Jeremy Johnson Austin Hinder
9 Jacoby Walker Jesse Scroggins Joe Boisture
10 Jesse Scroggins Andrew Hendrix Brett Nottingham

Several Gridironstuds Members Impress at ’09 Nike 7 on 7 Event

July 20th, 2009

Bridgewater, Dunkley, Johnson lead the Charge

Last week’s Nike 7 on 7 tournament in Beaverton, Oregon hosted some of the best high school football talent in the country and the players did not disappoint.

In the legion of stars on the fields, none shined brighter than Miami Northwestern quarterback and Gridironstuds.com member Teddy Bridgewater. Bridgewater led his team Miami Vapor Trail to the overall championship with precision passing and great athleticism. Through five games, Bridgewater was 150-103 for 68% completion rate. He totaled 1,739 yards passing and threw 19 TD’s against only one interception. With that kind of performance there’s little wonder why Vapor Trail took home the trophy.

Other Gridironstuds.com members putting up strong performances were Jesse Scroggins QB Lakewood H.S. (California), fellow Lakewood standout DB Dion Bailey. Pahokee High School’s Chris Dunkley and DeJoshua Johnson. Bridgewater’s Miami Northwestern teammates Michaelee Harris and Khambrel McGee. DeSoto H.S. (Texas) cornerback Adrian White.

There really were some outstanding individual performances, plays and displays of athleticism in the tournament. You have to be amazed at the level of speed, strength and power of the high school football players today.
