’09 Randy Shannon Football Camp Recap

June 16th, 2009

Allen Hurns Carol City High

The annual Randy Shannon football camp took place this past weekend and many of the local stars and hopefuls made appearances to show their stuff. Not to be outdone were a number of players from out of the area who also attended and competed at the camp.

A number of players made huge splashes and none more than 2010 Carol City High School wide receiver Allen Hurns. Hurns drew interest early when he clocked 40 times in the range of 4.41 and 4.45. However, he did not stop there. Hurns ran precise routes, proved to be tough to keep up with and even when he was covered, Hurns would take the ball away from the poor defensive backs who drew the task of covering him. Hurns’ performance was so loud that he was offered a scholarship by the UM staff. A couple of other receivers turned in strong performances and put their names on the map.

Everglades High School’s (2010) wide receiver Courtney Lester was an unstoppable force on the last day of the camp after being solid all weekend. Lester caught everything coming his way, showed great body control and made some great moves with the ball after the catch. He owned the 7-on-7 sessions on Monday.

American Heritage, Plantation’s Marken Michel also left an impression with solid route running, great hands and toughness. The junior to be put himself on the map with his stand out performance and took home the camp’s most outstanding wide receiver award.

From the defensive back category, Jeremy Cash tried his hand at safety and performed quite well. Cash has primarily been a linebacker but his size, strength and speed led to a try at safety where he performed well enough to take home top defensive back honors. Cash is a definite 2011 prospect to follow. Killian cornerback Michael Hall showed that Richard Leonard is not the only show in town in the Cougars’ defensive backfield. Hall made some good plays in 1-on-1 coverage, showed great bump and run skills and was a general nuisance to the offense. Coral Springs Charter’s Antoine Tharp was solid all weekend and turned in a strong enough performance to nab the overall outstanding camp performer award.

Appearances by Pace High School’s Stephen Morris, Gulliver Prep’s Michael Strauss and Northwestern’s Teddy Bridgewater highlighted the quarterback play. Morris displayed his big arm on several long balls. Strauss made his reads and put the ball where it needed to be. Bridgewater did not do much while he was there but his presence was noted by many.

Nature Coast High School’s 2010 running back Tevin Drake took home the most prestigious honor of Top Overall Performer at the Camp. Drake is a well put together athlete who showed good hands and solid route running coming out of the backfield. Drake already as an offer from the Hurricanes. Though he was there for only one day, Killian’s DeAndre Mann turned some heads with his amazing quickness and precision cuts. Mann also caught the ball well in 1-on-1 and 7-on-7 situations. I believe Mann will have a big season this year coming out of Lamar Miller’s shadow. One of the more talked about backs was American Heritage Plantation’s Sony Michel. The 5’11 180lb prospect will be entering the 8th grade this Fall but looks every bit of a man. Michel ripped off a 4.47 forty to force many to ask again, “what grade is he going to?” Sony, like his brother Marken, will be a player to watch this football season.  Sony was voted the most outstanding running back at the camp.

I did not spend much time with the TE’s but one thing was clear, Nature Coast Tech’s Braddie Ellison is a man. The 6’2″ Ellison dominated in 1-on-1′s and 7-on-7 sessions by being quick off the line and displaying soft hands. He is extremely athletic for his size and that was apparent to everyone. This would explain why he walked away with The Outstanding Tight End award. Nature Coast Tech’s entire program is something to keep your eye on this 2009 season.

Rumors and Wires

Pool of QB’s for 2010 starting to Get Shallow

June 12th, 2009

QB Nick Montana

You never really want to hit the panic button but if you are top flight Division-I program looking for a hot shot quarterback, it’s time to start doubling up on your efforts.

We have seen a recent run on quarterbacks of late as the signal callers have been making their commitments and intentions known to their prospective schools. We have seen three of the top 12 Rivals.com quarterbacks make commitments over the last two weeks.

Two weeks ago, #2 ranked Austin Hinder chose Jeff Tedford and California which seem to push Jake Heaps to make his choice which was BYU. Not sure if this was a domino effect but the Heaps commitment seemed to put a charge into Nick Montana who surprised many with his plans to go to Seattle and play for the Washington Huskies.

As it stands now, more than half of the Top 20 pro style QBs for 2010 have picked their schools. This is sure to make the D-I programs start making more of an effort to secure “their man”. The highest rated QB without a commitment at this time is Lakewood High School’s (California) Jesse Scroggins. Scroggins has been lauded over by many and he holds offers from just about anyone who’s serious about getting a QB. College coaches have been impressed with him on film and during the recent evaluation period last month, they were more impressed with him in person. See if you are impressed when you watch his film click here, I know I was. Scroggins has USC high on his list along with LSU and Tennessee. The Gators are on him strong and he expressed a strong interest in Cal. Scroggins is full of confidence and will not be deterred by who has committed where. Scroggins wants to make his decision before school starts and has echoed what a number of high school offensive skill players have been saying lately and that is they have a desire to play in a pro-style offense.

Other Top 20 QB’s still undecided are McKinney H.S. (Texas) Zach Lee, Cincinnati Moeller’s Andrew Hendrix, Valhalla H.S. (California) Pete Thomas, Cincinnati Xavier’s Luke Massa, Monte Vista (California) Brett Nottingham, East Valley California’s Tyler Shreve and Crespi High School’s (California) Bryan Bennett.

The smart coaches, however, know that all that glitters in the Top 20 is not gold. Many a great signal caller resides at the bottom of the list or not even on the list at all. As the top 20′s start to pick their place, sharp recruiters will make their moves on players they have been trying to keep on the down low. Often times, the schools have been putting their chess pieces in place with these players and use the run on commitments to pressure the player into making a commitment to them.

The list of top rated dual threat QB’s are just about as committed as the pro style QB’s. Of the Top 20 Rivals.com top rated dual threat QB’s, 11 of them are committed to schools. Here’s a list of those who are committed.

Player College
#2 Devin Gardner Michigan
#7 Johnny Deaton Oklahoma St.
#8 James Franklin Missouri
#9 Jeremy Johnson West Virginia
#11 Matt Brown Arizona
#13 Tom Parish Minnesota
#14 Tyler Smith Maryland
#15 Dallas Lloyd Stanford
#17 Connor Shaw South Carolina
#18 Trey Burton Florida
#19 Chandler Whitmer Illinois

The #1 ranked dual QB in the country Barry Bruneti is still undecided. Bruneti plays for Memphis University School in Tennessee and naturally is a candidate to attend Tennessee. However, Bruneti does not hold a Tennesse offer believe it or not. Tennessee is still in the running for Scroggins and Hendrix on the Pro Style QB side and apparently favor dual QB prospects like Miami Central’s Jeffrey Godfrey and Ft. Pierce Central’s Tim Smith better than Bruneti. Bruneti’s height (6’0″) concerns some colleges. Bruneti has listed favorites of Penn St., Mississippi St. and West Virginia. However, West Virginia already has a QB commit for class of 2010 in Jeremy Johnson.

Among the top named schools who have not yet locked down a commitment are Ohio St., USC, Oregon, Miami, Georgia, Notre Dame, Tennessee and FSU.   Ohio St. is was in hard on Nick Montana but lost out on him to Washington as did Notre Dame.   The Fighting Irish also missed out on Jake Heaps who opted to play ball at BYU.  Miami had an offer into dual QB threat Dallas Lloyd but lost him to Stanford.

6-10: Video of the Day: Devrin Young

June 10th, 2009

Today’s video of the Day comes from the Tennessee and Bearden High School.  Devrin Young is a football player in a true sense of the word.  Young is an exciting running back when he’s in the offensive backfield.  Watch him stick his foot in the ground and change direction in the blink of an eye.  Young is only listed at 5’7″ but he makes nothing but big plays.  In 2008,  his sophomore season, Young racked up 1,372 yards rushing,  caught seven passes for 186 yards and even threw a 29 yard pass.  He has both a punt return and kickoff return for a touchdown to his credit and he makes play after play from his cornerback spot on defense.  Devrin Young is one player worth watching.  Watch Devrin Young’s highlight video.

Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood Coming to a College Near U

June 6th, 2009

By: Chad Wilson
Gridironstuds.com Editor

High School wide receivers are getting bigger, faster and pass offenses more and more dangerous. With that being the case, the premium on top notched cover corners is rising like gas prices. That’s where a guy like Darius Robinson comes in.

Robinson is a six foot 170 lb. speedster that looks even taller on video and resembles a greyhound. His 4.41 speed has a lot to do with that and at his position, speed is a must. Robinson has a track background and has a 10.96 100 meter time to his credit. He also anchors his school’s 4 x 100 meter relay team.

Lending proof to the notion that top cover corners are in high demand, witness Robinson’s offer list that now totals 21 schools with new offers coming in seemingly every other day. As of press time, Robinson has offers from Miami, North Carolina, Maryland, Central Florida, Kentucky, Duke, South Florida, Wet Virginia, Purdue, Middle Tennessee St., Mississippi St., Toledo, Southern Miss., East Carolina, Stanford, Wake Forest, Michigan, Ole Miss, Michigan St., Washington and UAB.

Robinson will embark on a college visiting tour this summer starting with his admitted favorite The University of Miami on June 13th. “They (Miami) have always had the program I loved, especially when they were under Butch Davis,” said Robinson.

With Miami needing corners in this class, Robinson sees an opportunity. “Miami is a legit number one for me right now. They are recruiting me hard and they have much to offer me at the moment,” said Robinson. “They’re in need of corners and I feel I can battle to help the program early,” he added.

Early on in his football career, which began at age seven, Robinson was a running back and linebacker. At around age twelve, his coach saw the wisdom of putting his best athlete at quarterback which he played until he reached high school. Robinson thinks he bring something special to the party as a freshman for the school he chooses.

“I have good man to man skills. I can keep with with all my receivers because of my speed and I will come up and hit,” Robinson explained.

Growing up, he took a liking to former Hurricane and current Baltimore Raven Ed Reed. “His ball hawking skills really impress me,” said Robinson. He also pays close attention to the play of Denver’s Champ Bailey and San Diego’s Antonio Cromartie.

Currently Robinson is the 21st ranked cornerback in the country according to Rivals.com. Ranking high school football player’s is not an exact science and for Robinson, he does not put much into it. It takes a boat load of confidence to play the position of cornerback and that is something Robinson has in huge supply.

“I feel like I am the best corner in Georgia, no doubt,” Robinson proclaimed. “No disrespect to Ryan Ayers who is called number one in Georgia. We played together before and he doesn’t have what I have,” he stated.

Robinson will continue to take in the recruiting process and keep a level head but for now, he envisions himself setting up at a major Division I college, most likely Miami and showing receivers just how bad things can get for them in Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood.

Temple Texas RB Lache Seastrunk says his recruitment is still open but his recent actions and comments at Auburn’s Big Cat Weekend suggest that he’s going to be an Auburn Tiger. Seastrunk drew the attention of Bama fans when he said before large pro Tiger crowd “Nick Saban is S.O.L.” and “What’s up Nick Saban?” Those sound like the words of a guy who’s made his mind up already. You can view a video clip of “Big Cat Weekend” at the end of today’s report below.

Big time Byrnes H.S. (South Carolina) RB Marcus Lattimore who was an attendee at Big Cat Weekend has named his top Eight. Prior to attending “Big Cat Weekend” Lattimore had Auburn as his leader. Surprisingly, after attending, Auburn is no longer his leader but they are still amongst his top teams. Here are Lattimore’s top eight: Auburn, South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida St., Bama, Penn St. Clemson and Maryland.

While attending the Pahokee vs. Boyd Anderson Spring Game last Friday, University of Miami recruiting coordinator Clint Hurtt extended and offer to defensive back Raheem Buxton on the spot. The 6’2″ Buxton ran around making plays and looked quite athletic. He nabbed an interception in the first half of the contest.

Top rated DE and Gridironstuds.com member William Gholston names his top nine as: Ohio St., USC, Tennessee, Miami, Florida, Alabama, Michigan, Michigan St. and Oklahoma. Says he has no problem leaving the state to go to college.

Max Preps names St. Thomas Aquinas H.S. (Ft. Lauderdale) their preseason #1 team in the country. South Carolina Byrnes H.S. is ranked 2nd. The two teams meet on October 2nd.

Michigan Wolverines land big time Avon Lake (Ohio) OG Christian Pace. Pace was also considering Florida St., Stanford, Pittsburgh, Michigan St., Iowa, Illinois and Colorado.

Gridironstuds.com member Teddy Bridgewater from Northwestern H.S. (Miami) has stated that Georgia is his early favorite.

Gridironstuds.com member Darius Robinson has now reached 20 offers with the latest from Michigan St. and Washington.

More On the Number of Tennessee Football Offers for 2010

June 3rd, 2009
Kiffen and staff covering the globe

Kiffen and staff covering the globe

Well, my first article about Lane Kiffin’s 187 offers caused quite a stir, soI thought I would do a follow up on what seems to be an interesting topic.

You know how touchy some college football fans can be. That’s what you have to love about the college gridiron. There’s so much passion in the air. College football fans will defend their teams to the end like a criminal defense attorney standing in court with a client wearing a blood soaked T-shirt. You can’t tell a Gator fan that their team has had too many arrests. They will tell you why 28 is not a big number.

My pointing out that Kiffin and his staff have 187 offers out on the table was not an indictment in any way of Kiffin’s method’s or approach. Hell, for all I know, putting a bunch of offers out there may turn out to be a winning strategy. I am not saying that it’s right or wrong, I am merely pointing out that it’s a high number. Only time will tell if Kiffin’s methods are right. I do know one thing, if Kiffin’s objective was to return Tennessee football to the stream of consciousness of college football fans then he landed that dart in the red circle. I think all of America outside of the Knoxville are watching his regime like two speeding trains heading towards each other on the same track. They want to know if there will be a crash or if one of those trains will find another track and successfully avoid disaster.

As far as the number of offers are concerned, it’s high Vol fans and that’s a fact. If you are from Knoxville and want to draw attention to something,  you can take solace in the following fact:  Scout.com has Tennessee only listed for 114 offers (a number that can change on a daily basis). Where does this stand against other schools?  I checked it against the Top 10 teams in last year’s final BCS poll as well as some other notable schools and programs that I personally know have been very busy this offseason. Going by Scout’s numbers, the closest team to Tennessee is Alabama which has 90 offers out there followed closely by their nemesis and SEC combatant Florida (86) and West Virginia (86). This means that Tennessee has 24 more offers out there than the next closest team (or at least one that I could find). That’s an entire signing class ahead of the next team. Is it a good or bad strategy? Again, I don’t know but it’s both note and newsworthy which is what Kiffin’s master plan has been since he landed in Knoxville. Some think the old man in Oakland rubbed off on Kiffin more than he may want to let on. Let’s hope his results are different than that of the Raiders’ over the last few years.
